Defense of Freedom Institute 2024 Annual Report
April, 2024
From collapsing test scores in K-12 to a lack of institutional accountability in higher education, our country faces serious challenges
in education. As the only nonprofit led by former senior leaders in the U.S. Department of Education, DFI’s unique alchemy of policy, regulatory, and litigation expertise focused on federal activity has allowed us to confront this broad spectrum of challenges. As you will see below from our annual report for 2024, our track record proves we are poised and ready to continue to lead in 2025. The recent elections present an historic opportunity to enact long-overdue reforms that will advance education freedom, restore civil rights and the rule of law, and reduce an ineffective, entrenched federal education bureaucracy. We stand ready to work with our allies in and out of government to push reforms that will usher in a bold new era for education in America. The list of overdue changes is lengthy, but we are committed: reducing the federal footprint in education; helping states promote school choice and empower parents; purging critical race and gender theory from our schools, colleges, and universities; fighting the teacher unions; and demanding institutional accountability in higher education. But this is why we founded the Defense of Freedom Institute for Policy Studies (DFI).
Over the past year, we:
- Won the first-in-the-nation preliminary injunction against President Biden’s radical Title IX rewrite in Louisiana v. U.S. Department of Education, a major legal victory in protecting women’s sports, parental rights, and due process.
- Exposed the corrupting influence of teacher unions on K-12 education, earning national attention with our investigative reports: Billions of COVID Relief Didn’t Fix Learning Loss and Summer of Woke III: The Empire Strikes Back.
- Led the fight against Biden’s illegal student loan bailouts, including a multi-faceted grassroots campaign that generated more than 40,000 public comments opposing these unfair, costly, and unlawful schemes.
DFI’s 2024 Annual Report takes a deeper dive into our critical work and our vision for the future. Thank you for standing with us in this fight for a brighter future for America’s students and parents. The battle has really just begun.
