Since January 20, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education has engaged in the unprecedented unilateral elimination of billions of dollars in student loan debt and is engaged in rulemaking likely to result in even more substantial "forgiveness" of student loan debt. Several members of Congress and congressional staff members have called for the elimination of up to $50,000 in student loan debt per student and have urged the Department to move quickly in discharging massive amounts of student loan debt. In its FOIA request, DFI seeks records related to those congressional communications related to ED's emerging student loan debt policies.
