Since January 20, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education has used its Borrower Defense (BD) regulations to forgive approximately $2 billion in student loans and has discharged hundreds of millions of dollars in other student loan debt. The Department has repeatedly announced moratoriums in its student loan collection responsibilities. DFI’s FOIA request is for records of communications from and with outside interest groups and political advocates who appear to have driven the Department’s policy changes.
