Since January 20, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education has unilaterally initiated sweeping changes to its student loan debt policies, already discharging billions of dollars in student loan debt, forgoing its obligation to collect student loan debt, and planning unprecedented "forgiveness" of potentially hundreds of billions of dollars in student loan debt. Harvard Law School's "Project on Predatory Student Lending" ("PPSL"), whose founder and director is now Deputy General Counsel at the Department, has repeatedly pursued litigation against the Department to bring about many of the policies the Department is now pursuing. In its FOIA request, DFI seeks records of the Department's interactions with PPSL related to the Department's radical new student loan debt policies.
