Since January 20, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education has engaged in the unprecedented unilateral elimination of billions of dollars in student loan debt and is engaged in rulemaking likely to result in even more substantial "forgiveness" of student loan debt. For several years, certain legal advocacy groups supporting these policy positions have engaged in aggressive lawsuits against the Department to achieve these ends. Since January 20, 2021, ED's litigation positions and policies often reflect the objectives of those legal advocacy groups. In its FOIA request, DFI seeks records related to the communications of those legal advocacy groups (and associated individuals) regarding ED's litigation positions and related policies.
