Since January 20, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education has initiated unprecedented unilateral elimination of billions of dollars in student loan debt, is engaged in rulemaking likely to result in substantially more "forgiveness" of student loan debt, and is considering massive student loan forgiveness. Particular outside interest groups have lobbied the Department to initiate these radical changes and it appears that the Department is acting accordingly. In its FOIA request, DFI seeks records related to the communications of those outside interest groups to ED regarding ED's student loan program policies (particularly regarding wide-ranging forgiveness of student loan debt).
