PRESS RELEASE: Defense of Freedom Institute Releases Statement on ‘Dismal’ Nation’s Report Card Results

WASHINGTON—Defense of Freedom Institute Co-Founder Jim Blew released the following statement on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as The Nation’s Report Card, results released today: 

Americans entrust public schools with educating our children, yet the system is failing them. The latest dismal results from The Nation’s Report Card should be a wake-up call—our education system is broken. Protecting the status quo only perpetuates failure. It’s time to demand real change.

Lawmakers from both parties must put politics aside and confront the reality: the Trump administration’s proposed reforms are on the right track. The federal government’s heavy-handed role has become oppressive and counterproductive, stifling innovation and improvement. Congress has the power—and the responsibility—to fix it.

President Trump has also called for changes in the law to encourage voluntary donations to K-12 scholarship programs, unlocking new education options for families and greater opportunities for teachers. We know that choice and competition drive improvement in every other sector of our economy. The Nation’s Report Card makes it clear—it’s time to bring that same approach to K-12 education.
