PRESS RELEASE: DFI Releases Statement on Bipartisan Passage of DETERRENT Act

WASHINGTON—Defense of Freedom Institute for Policy Studies (DFI) President and Co-Founder Bob Eitel released the following statement on the bipartisan passage of the Defending Education Transparency and Ending Rogue Regimes Engaging in Nefarious Transactions (DETERRENT) Act: 

“The DETERRENT Act brings much-needed transparency and accountability to the billions of dollars flowing into American higher education from foreign sources. For too long, universities have been allowed to rake in money from America’s foreign adversaries with virtually no penalty for failing to report those transactions as required by federal law. It is no secret that countries like China and Qatar know that their path to influence runs through college campuses. Academic freedom and national security are in jeopardy by the Biden administration’s non-enforcement of existing law, and today’s vote is a much-needed step toward shoring up protections in our higher education system. DFI commends those Members who reached across the aisle to ensure the passage of this important bill.”
